Dhagpo Sheydrup Ling Monastic School in Kathmandu

Original text written by Lama Phuntsok, head of the school (Dhagpo Sheydrup Ling)

Dhagpo Sheydrup Ling Foundation is a Buddhist boarding school for young boys founded in May, 2007.
It has more then 100 students, 7 teachers and 6 general staff. While attending the school students are expected to learn both secular & non-secular subjects. These include basic and advanced Dharma teachings, language (Tibetan, Nepali and English), math, science and health and hygiene. Football matches are organized on the weekend and the boys are encouraged to play.

In the year since the KHCP has been helping the school, the boys’ health has greatly improved. Thanks to Peter and Pia, the main problems which had been plaguing the children – ringworm, fungus, chicken pox, jaundice, digestive problems and so on – are mostly gone. Also, the school is now much cleaner. The boys always enjoy Peter and Pia’s visits, as they give sound advice in a playful way and pass out gifts such as Tashi the bear toys to everyone. Even the principal says he learns something new each time they come.

Dhagpo Sheydrup Ling’s main objective is to provide the boys with a sound general education, but most importantly, to instill in each student the view and qualities of the lama who founded the school: Maniwa Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoché. Ideally, the student’s understanding will serve them during their entire lives, whether they decide to continue as monastics or laypeople; remain within the community or return to their native villages; pursue higher studies, join the workforce or spend their lives as Buddhist practitioners.

We also have a commitment to community service and organize social work outings to teach our boys the importance of helping others. So far we have organized garbage collection clean-ups in our neighborhood and regular visits to a home for destitute old women where we help with cleaning and laundry and bring food and good cheer to them. Everyone benefits greatly from these visits, and we plan to further develop this important aspect of a well-rounded education.
